1. PMC SMASHING 2016
By now, most KL-ites would know of, or have at least heard of Pestle & Mortar Clothing’s Smashing Weekend (or at least we hope). Always a good turnout and that one unfortunate time, literally impossible to get in, Smashing weekend did not begin as tradition - far from it - it began as just another excuse for a bunch of people (more than 3) to have a legal gathering, have some warm pre-cooked meats and pour satan's piss down our throats.
Along the way, in our drunken stupor, it became a way for us to celebrate the people that mattered the most to us - you, you and you. This year, 2016, we took a leap out of our comfort zone and put it up at Avenue K's vast open rooftop - even throwing a curveball in there and daring to play more than just EDM (we can see you candy flippers rolling your eyes!). Local up and comer, and protege of famed Malaysian rapper Jin Hackman, Airliftz dropped the first rhyme, followed by 2 very familiar KL faces on the decks, Reddi Rocket and H3. The night went out with a bang as Prince 85 (official member of The Weeknd’s XO Crew/the Weeknd’s official tour DJ in 2003) left us all with a memory that we hoped we weren't drinking away.
2. AGENDA TRADE SHOW 2016
Agenda is the most diverse and creative lifestyle fashion trade show in the world. Since 2003, Agenda has emerged as the premier destination for brands and retailers to converge. Agenda is where passion becomes profit and the business of creativity is conducted in a truly authentic environment. What began as a satellite show with a small grouping of 30 brands has since transcended into the quintessential lifestyle fashion trade show. Agenda’s portfolio now includes six shows in three cities, expertly curated with over 1,000 brands and a recurring brand-building conference. Strictly allowed to exhibit via invitation only, Pestle & Mortar Clothing managed to be the first streetwear brand to put Malaysia & Southeast Asia on the world map by exhibiting our Ante Up Spring & Summer 16 Collections at Agenda Las Vegas & Agenda Long Beach. A true epitome of the phrase - Malaysia Boleh!
3. INTRODUCTION OF SHAWN LEE TO THE PMC FAMILY
Propelled to stardom through his win at the Malaysian Beatbox Challenge held by Indie Youth Festival in 2009, Shawn Lee is a local beatboxer who had quickly cemented his name as one of Malaysia’s beatboxing protege. This success reached greater heights when he placed Top 4 in the Beatbox Battle World Championship 2012. Being Asia’s first beatboxer to put Malaysia on the map, the name ‘Shawn Lee’ is one that is recognisable and celebrated amongst Malaysians. Realising that it was his dream to be an all rounded entertainer, Shawn Lee then expanded his portfolio by starting his very own vlog channel - sharing his daily experiences with his fans throughout the world. With over 150,000 subscribers & 19 million views on his youtube channel, Shawn Lee is only destined for greatness - which is what you’ll get when two powerhouses come together.
4. GREYSON CHANCE & SKRILLEX #REPPINPMC
One of the greatest joys of being a lifestyle streetwear apparel brand is to see your products being repped by loyal fans in the marketspace. What brings more joy than this? - when you have international superstars reppin your gears loud & proud! This year, we’ve achieved another milestone by having renowned American singer/songwriter, Greyson Chance reppin our signature ‘KL Reverse’ Tee whilst he was in KL for his showcase show earlier this year. Shortly after that, we linked up with renowned DJ & pioneer for dubstep music, Skrillex, and hooked him up with our signature Camo Anorak! This is one step for us but a giant leap for the Malaysian streetwear scene!
5. LOC PRIME FRIDAYS x THE HUNDREDS x DEATH ROW RECORDS
KL is known for it’s diverse culture - ranging from food to the multiracial ethnicity. However, what people don’t know is that KL is a melting pot of raw musical talent. With this in mind, LoC Prime Fridays piloted in Dec 2015 with only one mission in mind - to provide a platform for these upcoming musical talents to showcase their art. Focusing mostly on the hip-hop genre, this pet project soon evolved to be one of KL’s finest party nights.
Known for it’s raw setup and energetic vibe (almost similar to ‘Boiler Room’), LoC Prime Fridays has catered KL with the finest tunes by working with both individual artiste as well as music collectives such as Hoax Vision & Akhyla throughout the year, cementing itself as the go-to party for most KL-ites on the first Friday of the month. Together with our brother-in-arms, Major Drop, LoC Prime Fridays reached its pinnacle when we collaborated with global streetwear giants, The Hundreds and OG L.A. recording label, Death Row Records on a special party to commemorate the launch of The Hundreds x Death Row Records Capsule Collection in Malaysia, which was a night that KL would never forget.
