(Circa 2010 : The debut of Pestle & Mortar Clothing at Urbanscapes)
Hugh, Pestle & Mortar Clothing Co-Founder, writing you all the way from Koh Samui, Thailand.
As we approached the final days of 2017 I asked myself where did 2017 go? I believe that was the general sentiment shared by many. As we continue to grow older, time seems to pass a lot quicker and therefore spending time on things that have a larger impact has been my mantra for 2017. If I could name 1 word to sum up 2017 it would be “reality”. The reality that we have survived the 7 year mark and have much to be thankful for! The reality that bloody hard work is needed in everything that we do. The reality that all of us need to constantly learn and re-learn to improve ourselves in this ever changing landscape.
Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought starting Pestle & Mortar Clothing together with my 2 of my homies would bring us to where we are today. If you would’ve told us back then that we would be collaborating with some of the biggest names in Streetwear or travelling across continents to showcase our brand we probably would not have believed you. But here we are almost 8 years from the day we sat around a ‘mamak’ table and spoke about starting a brand that would change our lives forever. In 2015 we launched a new venture Major Drop and have today built a kickass team of almost 50 strong. We built a total of 6 new stores and also closed a few but honestly the friendships and partnerships we have built around the world is what matters to us the most!
With every new uphill journey comes a new set of challenges that we learn to face. This is what keeps us going. This journey is a two way street and I would like to also use this as an opportunity to say thank you to all our homies who have continued to support us throughout this remarkable journey. The streetwear landscape continues to evolve with the emergence of many talented new brands. Social media and the rise of platforms such as Sneakerlah and Urbanscapes have all played a part in building the community one step at a time. Thank you to all of you.
We are extremely excited to get 2018 on the road and to share this journey with all of you. Without letting the cat out of the bag all I can say is 2018 is going to be mental! Be sure to stay tuned to our socials for all the latest updates.
My name is Hugh from Malaysia and we started Pestle & Mortar Clothing for the passion of Streetwear and community. Thank you and have yourself a beautiful 2018!
The Best of 2017
PMC x The Hundreds
This collaboration takes the number 1 spot solely due to the fact of what The Hundreds mean to us. We have been huge fans of the brand and especially the blog that acts as a guide to how we run our brand. To be able to work with likeminded people that we look up to is a dream come true. This is also the first year that we collaborated with a notable brand located all the way on the other side of the world. This capsule comprised of 2 t-shirts, 1 jacket and a cap.

PMC x Rastaclat
I got the privilege to meet Daniel – the founder of Rastaclat- when we participated in Agenda, Long Beach back in 2016. From that meeting we kept in touch. This eventually led us to become distributors of the brand in Malaysia. In late 2016 we shared our ideas of how we wanted to showcase Malaysia’s culture and heritage through a collaborative bracelet. The “Batikclat” was born. What was even more amazing was that we managed to sell a grand total of 600 bracelets with a hint of Malaysia’s identity on them.

House of 1A : Pestle & Mortar Clothing
House of 1A was a initiative by Dcode highlighting Pestle & Mortar Clothing as one of the movers and shakers of the Streetwear community here in Malaysia. We wanted to use this opportunity to showcase the elaborate process that happens behind producing a collection. We also ran a custom jacket workshop together with a screen printing lab. Over the 3 days we attracted over 800 people that went home knowing a little bit more about us.
In The Beginning – Forefront
In The Beginning was our Spring collection that went live in February 2017. This was also the first collection that we introduced our new range entitled “Forefront”. Forefront was our response to a crowd that understands the fashion industry better than any other generation has. Identified by a peach label this line is expertly crafted with 3 specific traits – thought, technique and application – key elements of timelessness. Ever since inception we have created over 100 new forefront styles. If this speaks to you do keep your eyes peeled to all our upcoming collections.
2017 also marks the return of our family program. We worked together with 4 talented individuals across multiple disciplines. In music we had Hip Hop artist Aman Ra and Reddi Rocket (Producer / DJ) and in lifestyle we had multi talented Shawn Lee and Harvinth Skin. In this day and age partnerships play an integral role within our company, you can’t do it alone! Finding partners that are on the same wavelength on what we want to achieve is extremely crucial.

Process and the ideology behind our work has been something we have been interested in. As a streetwear label we have always been about story telling and we hope to achieve this through our blog. Our website recently went through a revamp to cater a lot more on stories we want told. Moving into 2018 expect a lot more stories from all of us here at Pestle & Mortar Clothing.
